About The School

School Mission
The mission of Sumner High School is to engage (students) in an all-inclusive, culturally responsive, and multigenerational education that will inspire them to remain lifelong learners and productive citizens.
Quick Facts
  • Sumner was the only black public high school in St. Louis City until the opening of Vashon High School in 1927.
  • Sumner High School is the oldest high school west of the Mississippi River and is named after the well-known abolitionist senator Charles Sumner.

  • Dick Gregory, world-famous comedian, is a graduate of Sumner High School.
