About this school

Mission

Thomas Jefferson School engages its students in the education necessary to live as responsible citizens of the world. Through the strongest possible college-preparatory program and within a nurturing community, students develop a responsibility for their own learning and a desire to lift up the world with beauty and intellect.

Quick Fact 1

Many years ago, TJ selected the Greek word ὴ ἀρετή ("excellence") as its motto. The standard of excellence that shaped TJ in its infancy continues to guide the school today. Our primary goal is to prepare all students for the best possible college experience.

Quick Fact 2

At TJ, ideas are often valued more than answers. A liberal-arts approach to education forms the basis for the TJ curriculum. Students immerse themselves in the fundamental college-prep areas of English, math, language, science, social studies, and art, choosing electives in certain areas as they get older, but sharing a core educational experience with peers across all grades. Students learn to think deeply and mine for knowledge and ideas, and they learn to demand that approach from themselves, their classmates, and their teachers.

Quick Fact 3

We know that high-ability students thrive when they are surrounded by others who are equally enthusiastic about learning. TJ’s dynamic curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our small classes of motivated students (6:1 student teacher ratio). We offer the kind of depth, abstraction, and complexity that allow higher-level thinking and the development of critical-thinking skills. In class discussion, on the basketball court, in a newspaper staff meeting, or on the stage, TJ students apply their learning in and out of the classroom.
